My Aunt Bobbie used to have a saying when someone was looking for something they lost. She'd say, "First, take a long look. If that doesn't work, take a short look. And if that doesn't work, take another long look."
Well, I'm always on the "look out" for new creative ideas and I've used her advice many times. When I see something that catches my creative eye, the first thing I do is take a long look, meaning that I look at the overall design. Second, I take a short look focusing on each of the individual design elements. Then I take another long look noting how all of the pieces work (or don't work) together. This technique works equally well whether you are looking at a great design or a bad one. Of course the designer in me is constantly rearranging the design in my mind anyway :)
So the next time something catches your creative eye remember my Aunt's advice and soon your creative eye will be seeing more.
Thanks for looking ~Susan
